Software that produces answers it was not explicitly programmed to produce.
The useful distinction is not clever versus not clever. It is written down versus learned. Traditional software follows rules a person wrote. AI systems derive their behavior from data and an objective, which is why they generalize to situations nobody anticipated, and why nobody can point at the line that caused a given output.
Why it matters
Every governance process you already own assumes the first kind.
